SIMNA WA held a ‘Measurement Hotseat’ event on July 24 as part of CSI’s 10-day Social Impact Festival. The event featured eight people concurrently telling a 10-minute story of a social impact measurement decision or lesson from the previous year. Each audience member then moved tables to hear from a second and then a third presenter. The format worked really well, although our learning for next year was that each presenter should have one rotation free to listen to someone else!
The focus was on the tips and tricks of the measurement process, rather than the thing that was being measured. Most presenters also gave their audience a one-page example/template/summary to give them a kick start with their own measurement back in the office.
Here are some highlights:
- Karina Chicote shared her experience mapping services for place-based collaboration with Save the Children Australia
- Dylan Smith talked about benchmarking and tracking inequality at the Fremantle Foundation
- Sue Lee from WA Primary Health Alliance shared the process of developing a user-friendly outcomes framework
- Ric Dale shared the story of creating an outcomes measurement culture at @YMCAWA
- Christina Kadmos talked about using storytelling to understand, measure and communicate social impact
- Desiree Nangle shared her experiences measuring the social impact of advocacy at the Minderoo Foundation
- Dr. Katrina Stratton presented on how Wanslea aligned the purpose of many diverse stakeholders (including two government departments and three universities) in a 2-yr research project.
- Tony Hagan gave the board perspective, sharing how the Befriend board is using their recent evaluation to guide their decisions
Following the recommendation of many of our audience members, Perth people have the chance to hear more from Desiree Nangle on the 31st October at the Platform 4 to 5.30pm. Put the date in your diaries and we’ll be in touch with more information soon!
It was fantastic to have such a range of topics and valuable insights and SIMNA WA thanks all our incredible presenters for sharing their measurement journey. We also thank the Platform – it’s so great (and we’re so grateful) to have this incredible venue for not-for-profits in Perth!
