Setting the Standards: The Antidebate

September 19, 2023 By Administrator

Measuring What Matters. The UN SDG Impact Standards. The SVI Standards. There is an assumption behind these frameworks: That we cannot achieve comprehensive social change without rigorous standards and frameworks which provide accountability. Is this true? Join us for an antidebate hosted by the Western Australia Organising Committee: A highly participatory session where we’ll throw the spotlight on some of the assumptions behind impact assessment and evaluation. Bring a glass of milk because things are about to get spicy!

When: Tuesday 19 September 2023, 1.00-2.00 pm AWST (3.00-4.00 pm AEST)

Where: Online (Zoom)

Tickets: Free for SIMNA members, $15 for non-members. Tickets are available here.

Event overview

In Capitalism After the Crises, Jim Chalmers said that “Being a good policymaker begins with having the right information, mental models for how the world works.”

The push for standards can be seen as a push for some mental models over others. The discussion then becomes a question about which standards should be used, rather than whether standards are necessary or helpful.

In the antidebate, we’ll unpack the assumption behind standards: We cannot achieve comprehensive social change without rigorous standards and frameworks which provide accountability.

This webinar will be highly participatory. Grab a cuppa but leave your mic and camera on. Whether you’ve got a strong opinion or just a willingness to listen and reflect, your presence is valued. In the antidebate our goal is not to answer the question but to unearth the complexity behind it.

We encourage all attendees to pre-read two documents to get a sense of different positions on this issue:

  • Ali Sumner’s Resource Paper: Social Impact Standards
  • Aden Date’s Newsletter: Bad Faith Evaluation
